Ever wondered how a bunch of fluffy wool becomes a strand of yarn? Before the giant wheels of the industrial revolution, there was the drop spindle—a simple, portable, and meditative tool used for millennia.
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll master the "park and draft" method, turning fiber into unique, hand-spun yarn that you can use for knitting, crochet, or weaving.

What You’ll Learn
-
Fiber Literacy: Understand different types of wool and spinning fibres and how "staple length" affects your spin.
-
The Mechanics: How to use gravity and twist to create strength in your thread.
-
Drafting Techniques: Mastering the pull-and-twist motion to control yarn thickness.
-
Plying & Finishing: How to turn two strands into one balanced yarn and set the twist so it doesn't unravel.
Why You’ll Love It
-
Portable Zen: Unlike a spinning wheel, a spindle fits in your bag. Spin at the park, on the bus, or while watching a movie. Some folks even spin while walking!
-
Tactile Connection: There is something deeply satisfying about creating yarn from a raw material. One can’t help but think about how it connects us with our natural environment and all the spinners who came before us over thousands of years.
-
No Experience Needed: This class is designed for absolute beginners. If you can twirl a top, you can spin yarn!

If you’ve visited our store, there’s a good chance you’ve already met Alison!
A couple years ago, Alison overdid it on knitting and had to find something else to do while her joint irritation healed. Enter the drop spindle! As well as the vast world of spinning and all the gorgeous cotton candy spinning fibres that go with it. Much like knitting, there’s a (very fluffy) rabbit hole one can explore when they get into spinning. They say Alison is still somewhere in that rabbit hole and occasionally emerges to share her love of fibre with others. The data is unclear whether her emergence also forecasts the coming of spring. We can only hope.
